If you are familiar with Greek mythology you will know the bittersweet story of Adonis and Aphrodite: the goddess of love became infatuated with the handsome youth, who was killed by a jealous god; his red blood spilled onto the earth and stained the anemone flower red. Aphrodite was so in love with Adonis that he was granted life again, and this painting shows him as he lies among red anemones being awakened by Aphrodite, in pink.
